At greenscreen®, we love to get out and be engaged with the design community! Being a sponsor of the FACADES+ symposiums has been a great way for us to stay informed about the latest design trends in facade technology and the architectural firms that are responsible for the trends. The 2017 symposium series kicked off on January 26th in sunny Miami Beach, FL.
The morning keynote speaker was Shohei Shigematsu of OMA and Shohei described the process of specificity that OMA uses to design their “box” concepts instead of delivering a specific style of architecture to clients. Mr. Shigematsu discussed significant project work that demonstrated this design approach; CCTV Headquarters (Bejing), Milstein Hall (Cornell University), Pierre Lassonde Pavilion (Quebec) and the Coach flagship store in Omotesando (Japan).
The Faena Forum, where the symposium was held, was the feature of Mr. Shigemasu’s presentation and if you ever go to Miami Beach it is worth the effort to check out this architectural gem! The Forum is an art performance space that is a part of the Faena complex and is located on Collins Avenue, just north of the historic art deco style hotels that can be found on Miami Beach and South Beach.
The afternoon keynote session featured Jose Alvarez and Z Smith from the 2014 AIA Firm of the Year, Eskew Dumez Ripple (EDR), based out of New Orleans, LA. EDR eats, sleeps and walks the sustainability walk by providing post occupancy commissioning to make sure that their buildings are functioning as designed and showcased two of their local New Orleans projects; the Bioinnovation Center and 938 Porydras. The firm believes in the infusion of beauty with sustainability and Z’s enthusiasm was complemented by Jose’s design insights.
FACADES+Miami was well received with over 200 attendees and Diana, Bill, Dionne and Susan always put together a stimulating program. Check their schedule to see when it is coming to your area! greenscreen® participates whenever possible and we have come to appreciate the company that they keep. Of course, we also took in a couple of South Florida projects and wanted to share with you one of our latest installations.
Hialeah Park Racing and Casino in Hialeah, FL has undergone a major renovation and greenscreen® custom panels have been installed to mimic the original wooden trellis structure that once graced this historic structure. Watch this video to see what the mature Bougainvillea previously looked like on the wood trellis! The new facade was designed by Ewing Cole (Philadelphia) and the installation was overseen by the general contractor, Link Construction. We remember Hialeah Park Racing for the flamingos, but in a couple of years are looking forward to returning to start some new memories of Bougainvillea on greenscreen®!
