Up on a roof with greenscreen® in Chicago

Up on a roof with greenscreen® in Chicago

Wow, is it Summer already?  It seems like just yesterday we were in Miami for Facades+ and since then the greenscreen® road show has been to San Francisco in March for Lunch & Learns and to check on our installation at Transbay Terminal, AIA in Orlando, the International Parking Institute (IPI) Conference in New Orleans then up to the City of Broad Shoulders for more Lunch & Learns and project installations. We love to get out and be engaged with the design community and our clients! While we were gallivanting around Chicago checking out new installations, there was one that we thought you would enjoy seeing.

The roof terrace at the DePaul School of Law on E. Jackson Blvd. has gone through a complete renovation and the results (and views) are impressive.

The 11th floor terrace now features greenscreen® panels on a structural steel frame with custom Old Town Fiberglass planters, ipe benches, perforated metal sections and a pedestal paver deck. We originally consulted with Walker Restoration regarding this project’s design back in 2015 after a Lunch & Learn and couldn’t be more proud of how the project turned out. The structural steel was installed by Sturdi Iron out of Park Forest, IL and the greenscreen® panels were mounted both vertically and horizontally overhead.

The attachment detailing on these types of projects can be challenging, but thanks to the project management skills of Rachael back in the home office, everything worked out as planned! The project uses our 5132R Clip for both the vertical and overhead attachments.

The custom Old Town Fiberglass planters were installed and planted by Intrinsic Landscaping from Glenview, Il. The plantings were selected for hardiness and seasonal interest. All of the planters are plumbed for drainage and drip irrigation in addition to a precautionary 2″ foamboard insulation placed around the insides of the planters to add an extra layer of protection from Chicago winters.

Unfortunately, our visit took place in June and students were on break, but you can only imagine the roof terrace full of students, eating lunch, charging devices from the solar panel picnic tables and enjoying some great Chicago weather.  Our guess is that probably won’t be happening in January!
